Eli Tomac’s massive points lead, which he built in dominating fashion by starting the season with five straight moto wins, vanished in the blink of an eye Saturday at Round 3 of Lucas Oil Pro Motocross at Thunder Valley. The Colorado native was on his way to a sixth straight moto win at his home race before a violent crash late in the race knocked him out of the moto.
Tomac was seen sitting on the side of the track holding his wrist before being carted off by the Asterisk Medical Mobile Unit. In a team statement released last night, GEICO Honda co-owner Jeff Majkrzak said that Tomac sustained a dislocated shoulder, but the team “hope[s]” to have him back next week.
“The Asterisk medical team was able to put his shoulder back in place at the track, and Eli is otherwise just fine,” said Majkrzak.
“Man, once again, I was out pretty close to the front early on, which helped me get to the lead there,” Tomac said in a statement. “Had a good little battle with Ken there and snuck around him. Then at that point I tried to stay on two wheels because this track is really, really rutted today. It can come up and bite you.”
Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey went on to win the race and capture the points lead for the first time this season. He leads Tomac by three points heading into Round 4 next Saturday at Muddy Creek. We will continue to update Tomac’s status later in the week.
