Rough night for Honda HRC’s Trey Canard, but considering how unlucky he’s been the last few years, the night could have been much worse.
In practice, Trey aggravated a injury he’d been dealing with for a few weeks . In the heat things got scary, he was landed on by another rider—luckily only getting hit on the hand.
“He and about two other guys jumped over the table top, and someone jumped onto the table, and they jumped off the table and jumped into the back of him,” Honda team manager Dan Betley told our Kyle Scott after the race. “So I don’t know if there was some banging going on prior to that, but he ended up cutting his throttle hand. They didn’t want to do stitches right there because with the swelling he would have ripped them out. They just taped it up a little bit and threw it in a glove and he raced. He was bleeding—he’s a tough guy.”
Then in the main event, Canard and Justin Brayton came together, and Canard ended up in the Tuff Blocks. His night was over.
“He made a pass on Brayton and Brayton came back in on him and ran him pretty high—I don’t think either guy wanted to give an inch. It was hard for me with my view from the announcer’s tower to see exactly what happened,” said Betley.
“He was, I’m sure, so frustrated, he was just over it. Then he’s been dealing with a groin pull that he’s had for a couple of weeks, and that’s why he was struggling last week. I just feel bad for him. He’s showing signs of speed and it’s just so frustrating.”
Canard is day to day, so he’ll probably be back to race in Oakland. We’ll keep you updated. We also asked Betley about GEICO Honda’s Justin Bogle, who missed Anaheim 2.
“Same thing, he didn’t start the year 100 percent fresh, he’s been nursing his foot,” Betley said. “Then when he went down last week he hit his head, he had some headaches during the week. I thought it would be best for him to just sit out. He didn’t ride this week. I just told him to check in with us every couple of days and let us know where he’s at, and when he’s ready to ride he’ll be out there.”
Not much is known yet about Dean Wilson, who washed his front tire out in the second practice and crashed, twisting his knee. At first he was said to be a race-time decision if he could race, and in the end Dean and the team decided to sit it out.
Dean has an MRI scheduled for tomorrow, so more should be known after that. He missed nearly all of last season due to a torn ACL.
