NASCAR conducted a data test last Friday on a road course at Charlotte Motor Speedway with JTG Daugherty and AJ Allmendinger.
Multiple reports state that NASCAR could consider using the track’s road course for one of its events there this year.
Charlotte Motor Speedway declined to comment on the reports, and a JTG Daugherty Racing spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
While reports suggested the All-Star race could use the road course layout, the challenge could be the narrow timeline before that May 20 event. Goodyear might want to test before the event and that likely would need to be done about two months beforehand.
The 2.3-mile road course could be used for the Oct. 7 playoff race, the Bank of America 500. That is the opening race of the second round.
The idea of using the track’s road course for NASCAR has been considered previously, including when All-Star Race changes that were discussed last year.
Charlotte Motor Speedway, owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc., began holding NASCAR races in 1960, but has never held anything outside sports car races on the road course.
There are currently two road courses on the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series circuit. The June 25 race at Sonoma Raceway and the Aug. 5 event at Watkins Glen International.
