Formula One’s Canadian Grand Prix was postponed Tuesday, delaying the start of the 2020 season until at least late June.
Originally scheduled for June 14, the race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal becomes the ninth round of the 2020 schedule to be affected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic so far this year. Race organizers are working with F1 to find a replacement date for the event.
“This postponement was not a decision that was taken lightly or easily,” organizers said in a statement on the event’s website. “Over the past month, we have been in constant communication with Formula 1 and representatives from the city of Montreal, Tourism Montreal and both provincial and federal governments. We have heard the directives issued by public health officials and as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic are following the expert guidance provided by the authorities.”
With the postponement of the Montreal round, the French Grand Prix is currently scheduled June 28 as the 2020 season opener.
