The Heart of Racing Team’s lineup will look mostly familiar in 2023 following its entries submitted for the upcoming IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.
Roman De Angelis will return to defend his GT Daytona (GTD) championship with a new co-driver, reigning 24 Hours of Le Mans winner, Marco Sorensen, in the No. 27 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage GT3, while Alex Riberas and Ross Gunn will be paired for a second season in the No. 23 Aston Martin in the GTD PRO class.
Team principal Ian James and three-time Le Mans winner Darren Turner will join De Angelis and Sorensen in the No. 27 entry for next month’s Rolex 24 At Daytona, with David Pittard joining the No. 23 GTD PRO entry for the iconic 24-hour race.
De Angelis has been with Heart of Racing since 2020. The 21-year-old Canadian has collected five wins, including two in 2022 when he and the No. 27 Aston Martin captured the GTD driver and team titles. Sorsensen, the 32-year-old from Denmark, was part of the winning Aston Martin team in the GTE Am class at Le Mans in June. His previous WeatherTech Championship experience has been limited to a pair of Rolex 24 appearances.
Riberas and Gunn finished fourth in the 2022 GTD PRO standings, taking victories at Long Beach and in the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. Gunn has five career series wins, Riberas four.
“We are really pleased to have finalized our plans for the year and we are ready to get things off on the right foot at Daytona,” James said. “We have fantastic support from Aston Martin and our driver lineups are very strong.
“The crew is almost entirely identical to our group as last year, so we have a lot of experience together as a team to build on this season and everyone is just looking ahead to getting things going at the Roar next month.”
The 2023 WeatherTech Championship season kicks off with the Roar Before the Rolex 24 test session Jan 20-22, followed by Rolex 24 race week Jan. 26-29 at Daytona International Speedway.
