Bob Osborne stepped down as Carl Edwards’ crew chief last July, citing undisclosed health reasons.

He’s still helping Edward and Roush Fenway Racing, only from behind the scenes.

“Bob is still here at the race track, he’s still in all the meetings,” Edwards said after new crew chief Jimmy Fennig helped him end a 70-race winless streak. “He doesn’t seem as stressed out. He’s a little easier to get along with, which is nice.”

Edwards said the last part in jest, but it’s clear the new Edwards-Fennig pairing with Osborne behind the scenes is working.

Edwards and Fennig teamed up for their first win together on Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway, holding on after a late caution.

Osborne has been working behind the scenes in a new department that does the planning six races out instead of the usual two.

“Bob has been there for Jimmy and he’s been there for me and he’s been there for Carl,” owner Jack Roush said. “He’s bringing his considerable knowledge to the benefit of all the programs.” (Associated Press)
