Last week, James Edens’ hopes of a podium finish in the inaugural iRacing World of Outlaws Carquest Sprint Car Series race at Lincoln Speedway ended abruptly when a three-way battle for second place ended with all three drivers wrecked on the final lap. This week, as the series visited Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55, Edens bounced back in a big way: he won the first heat over top qualifier Aiden Bierlein, led 13 laps of the race, and grabbed the lead for the last time with just a handful of laps to go to return to the winner’s circle for the first time this season.
Once again, it was Timothy Smith on the losing side of the battle in second. For the third time in five races so far this season, and the second week in a row, Smith spent a significant amount of time up front after grabbing the lead from Edens for the first time on Lap 9. But after the last caution flew on Lap 27 to bunch up the field, he would lose it shortly after the restart thanks to heavy pressure from Edens and Dylan Yeager, who finished third. It was nonetheless a strong recovery for Smith, who was a part of last week’s last-lap accident at Lincoln with Edens and points leader Alex Bergeron.
Fortunes flipped, meanwhile, for Lincoln winner Kenny Miller at I-55. While he was able to avoid last week’s accident for an uncontested first career series win, he was the victim of the final caution of the night after late-race contact with two-time race winner Hayden Cardwell. Miller joined Tanner Pettit, who failed to finish the feature for the second week in a row, as the only two drivers not to complete all 35 laps.
