Hear the words “A weekend of Bikini Bottom-themed entertainment,” and you’re thinking fun in the sun, right?
Not exactly in this case.
In a news release from Nickelodeon, it announced that the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway on May 9 will be the SpongeBob SquarePants 400.
Yep, you read that right.
These are words that Kansas Speedway president Patrick Warren said in a news release:
“I’m excited to partner with Nickelodeon for the SpongeBob SquarePants 400 on May 9. This is a great opportunity for us to engage SpongeBob fans of all ages to racing with a great partner.”
Nickelodeon said that there will be a Nickelodeon Kids Zone in the Kansas Speedway Fan Zone.
“The area will feature appearances from the SpongeBob SquarePants costumed characters, a SpongeBob SquarePants photo station and more,” according to the news release.
Also from the news release, “The SpongeBob SquarePants 400 … will feature a weekend of Bikini Bottom-themed activities and fun for the entire family.”
For the uninitiated, SpongeBob SquarePants is an animated television series on Nickelodeon. The title character lives in a underwater city named Bikini Bottom.
He has a pet snail named Gary, a close friend named Patrick Star (but he ain’t the brightest star), Sandy Cheeks, a squirrel from Texas, and well, that’s probably enough.
Nickelodeon said it had previously sponsored the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2004.
The race at Kansas Speedway is at 6:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.
I must admit, it’s going to be fun to hear the Fox Sports 1 announcers saying the words “SpongeBob SquarePants” all night.
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready!
