Kurt Busch is saying hello to NASCAR’s Chase, goodbye to thoughts of competing in IndyCar’s season-ending race at Auto Club Speedway.

Busch had hoped to use an IndyCar race this season as a trial run for next year’s Indianapolis 500. But a sponsor hasn’t been secured, and the deadline to order a Chevrolet engine has passed.

Meanwhile, the Chase begins Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway, and Busch is positioned for a run at his second series championship.

“It was something that was very important in the month of May this year; it’s not as important with it being the middle of September right now,” he said Thursday of driving an Indy car.

Busch said it doesn’t “eliminate” the possibility of running the 500, one of his bucket-list items.
