The Arizona Republic’s Michael Knight talked to NASCAR President Steve Phelps prior to Sunday’s race at Phoenix Raceway:
While it’s unclear if a final decision has been made, it appears all-but certain that NASCAR’s Championship Weekend will return to Phoenix Raceway in 2021.
“Clearly Phoenix would be the leader in the clubhouse,” NASCAR President Steve Phelps said during a wide-ranging exclusive interview with The Republic before Sunday’s FanShield 500.
For the first time, the Avondale oval will host the title-deciding races for all three NASCAR national series Nov. 6-8, getting the prized date after 18 years at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The only potential obstacle for Phoenix in 2021 was obliterated by Sunday’s much-improved racing – which Phelps predicted. The combination of a low downforce car, softer Goodyear tires and better placement of the traction compound, upped the entertainment quotient for the crowd of 34,000 as estimated by The Republic.
[Regarding the 2021 schedule:] Phelps now says he expects some schedule details will be announced in April, but not the full calendar.
