Following the only race weekend that Iowa Speedway will see in 2020, there are rumors swirling that the race track is likely to either be closed or sold before years end.
Earlier in the year, NASCAR announced that Iowa Speedway would not host the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoor Truck Series and both NASCAR Xfinity Series as initially planned due to COVID-19 in 2020, even though Iowa state government would have allowed fans at a limited capacity.
In early April of this year, NASCAR announced that a majority of the staff at the speedway had been released from their positions, and the tracks president, David Hyatt, and a small number of staff will stay to operate races this year.
The talk for the past couple years was that Iowa Speedway was bleeding money and either going to be put up for sale or shut down by its owners at International Speedway Corporation. Then, following last weekend’s IndyCar doubleheader, the rumor surfaced that Roger Penske is going to purchase the racy oval outside Newton, IA to ensure it stays on the schedule.
At this point it’s owned by ISC and we’d like to continue to rent it in the coming years,” replied Penske when asked if he was interested in buying the track designed by one of his former NASCAR drivers, Rusty Wallace. “We did a contract this year where we were the promoter, and all we did was make a deal to rent the track. And we’d like to continue to rent it in future years.”
