Axalta Coating Systems will serve as primary sponsor for 15 races each in 2017 and 2018 on the No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro of Xfinity Series rookie William Byron, JR Motorsports announced Wednesday.
Byron will sport Axalta colors for the first time this season on March 18 at Phoenix Raceway. Axalta joins Liberty University (17 races) as co-primary sponsors of Byron for the majority of this season’s races. Axalta will also serve as a major associate sponsor during all non-primary races.
It’s the continuation of a partnership between Axalta and JR Motorsports that dates back to the 2008 season, and back to 1992 with Hendrick Motorsports when the company was known as DuPont.
Byron won a rookie record seven races last season in the Camping World Truck series before earning Rookie of the Year honors.
He signed a multi-year contract with Hendrick Motorsports last season and was named to a full-time Xfinity Series ride with the affiliated JR Motorsports for 2017.
Byron made his Xfinity Series debut this past Saturday at Daytona International Speedway, finishing ninth.
In addition to Byron flying Axalta colors, Dale Earnhardt Jr. will have Axalta as primary sponsor of his No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports NASCAR Cup Chevrolet for 13 races this season.
